INGREDIENTS
For Filling
- 500 grams minced beef
- 1 cup potatoes, cubed
- 1/2 cup carrots, cubed
- 1 medium onion, chopped
- 3 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 1 teaspoon curry powder
- 1 teaspoon thyme
- 1 teaspoon white pepper
- Seasoning cubes to taste
- Salt to taste
- 1 cup water
- 3 tablespoons flour – to bind
- 1/2 cup water
For Dough
- 4 1/2 cups all purpose flour
- 11/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 3 tablespoons powdered milk, optional
- 1 cup butter or baking margarine or half of both
- 1/4 to 1/2 cup water
For coating
- 1 egg
PROCEDURE
Step 1
Gather the ingredients.
Step 2
Heat up the oil in a pot over medium heat, add the minced meat, stirring every now and again until its no longer pink and most of its juices have dried up. About 3 minutes.
Step 3
Add the chopped onions, curry, thyme, white pepper, seasoning cube and salt to taste. Fry for about 2 minutes.
Step 4
Now add the carrots and potatoes.
Step 5
Add 1 cup of water and stir to combine, cover and cook until the potatoes are tender.
Step 6
Dissolve 3 tablespoons of flour in 1/2 cup of water and mix thoroughly.
Step 7
Pour the flour mixture into the pot, give it a good stir and allow to cook for about 2 minutes. Take off heat and leave to cool.
Step 8
Mix together the flour, powdered milk, baking powder and salt. Add the butter and/or margarine.
Step 9
Using the tip of your fingers, rub flour and butter together until mixture resembles breadcrumbs.
Step 10
Now add in the water, a little at a time and mix until a dough is formed. Knead until smooth and a little stretchy, about 2 minutes.
Step 11
Wrap in cling film and allow to rest for at least 30 minutes.
Step 12
After the dough is well rested, preheat your oven to 350 degrees F. Line a baking tray with parchment paper or lightly grease with butter. Set aside. Sprinkle a bit of flour on your work surface and rolling pin and roll out dough to about 1/4 inch thickness. You can work with a little dough at a time.
Step 13
Cut out dough using a round cutter or bowl and trim off excess.
Step 14
Add a tablespoonful of filling to the center of dough, you can use more or less depending on the size of pies you want ( I made mini pies). Just don’t over fill.
Step 15
Fold one part of the dough over the other and use a fork to press the edges tight.
Step 16
Repeat the process for the remaining filling and dough and arrange in the baking tray. Crack the egg into a bowl, mix to combine and brush top of pies with it using a pastry brush.
Place in the preheated oven and bake for 25 to 30 minutes depending on the pie size. Mine was ready in 25 minutes.
Step 17
Remove from oven and allow to cool a bit, that’s if can you wait.
Step 18
Sit Back, Relax and Enjoy!
