Twisted Doughnuts

These cinnamon twisted doughnuts fry up crispy on the outside and light and spongy on the inside. The dough is quite simple to make and doesn’t require much kneading.

INGREDIENTS

  • Water – 1/4 cup
  • Yeast – 1 tablespoon
  • Sugar – 1/2 teaspoon
  • Egg – 1
  • Butter – 2 tablespoons, melted
  • Sugar – 4 tablespoons
  • Milk – 3/4 cup
  • Nutmeg – 1/2 teaspoon
  • Salt – 1/2 teaspoon
  • Flour – 3 cups
  • Oil – for deep frying

PROCEDURE

Pour the 1/4 cup of water into a sizeable bowl. Add the yeast, 1/2 teaspoon of sugar, and mix to combine.

Leave until frothy. About 5 to 10 minutes.

Add the egg, melted butter, milk, salt, flour, grated nutmeg, and mix until a dough forms. You don’t have to knead.

Oil the insides of a bowl, place the dough in it. Cover and place in a warm spot for 40 minutes.

After 40 minutes, deflate the dough. Sprinkle a bit of flour on your work surface and knead for about 2 minutes.

Return the dough into the bowl, cover and allow to rise for another 40 minutes.

Tip the dough on your floured work surface and cut it into 14 to 16 pieces. Shape each dough into balls.

Working with one dough ball at a time, roll it out to about 8 inches long. Take the dough off your work surface, hold it up in a U shape and bring the tips together. Twist the dough and press the edges tightly.

Transfer unto a floured tray and repeat the process for the pieces of dough.

Cover the tray with a kitchen napkin and leave for 10 minutes.

After 10 minutes, flip the doughnuts upside down so the bottoms don’t get flat.

Leave the tray uncovered for 10 minutes.

Heat up some oil for deep frying.

Fry the doughnuts a little at a time. Flip when the bottom part is golden and continue frying until it’s golden all over.

Remove from oil and transfer to a paper towel-lined tray to soak up excess oil.

Sprinkle some cinnamon sugar over them

To make the cinnamon sugar, you’ll need;

  • Sugar – 4 tablespoon
  • Cinnamon powder – 1 tablespoon.

Combine the sugar and cinnamon powder and mix until well combined. That’s it!
